ROMAN SIGNET RING, 1ST-4TH CENTURY AD, SIZE 8 3/4 11/07/2023 now with dark patina from1st 4th century AD. Iconic form and subject. 1. 4mm rounded band. Raised circular bezel with the Hippocampus figure cut in. See Ancient Rings, Pollio, p. 80 for a virtually identical example. The hippocampus was a mythical sea creature with the forebody of a horse and the rear of a fish, which accompanied Poseidon. Fine preservation with the 24karat gold surface restored for modern wear. Gift boxed with certificate of authenticity.
